Common sub-workflows

The following sections provide information about parts of the Toast platform payment workflow that are common to credit card and cash payment types.

Note

The changes to the payment workflow are in limited release and do not affect all Toast platform restaurant locations.

Digital receipt options

If a guest does not have a known receipt preference, the POS app displays a receipt choice screen. The Email and Text options direct the guest to a sub-screen where they can enter contact info (or choose to go back).

This screen has a different layout for handheld devices.

If a guest does have a known receipt preference, the POS app directs them to that screen (email, text). If the guest's contact information is known, the POS app enters the guest's information in the input field with a masked version (for example, seb*****@someemail.com). The guest can go back in the workflow to choose a different receipt type.

The Always print a copy of the receipt feature is still available. When that feature is enabled, a receipt is printed even if the guest selects Email, Text, or No Receipt. (If the guest selects Email or Text, they will also receive the digital receipt.)

Guest Feedback and Rewards Signup (which follow Receipt Options) use any email address or phone number provided in a prior step in order to avoid making the guest enter the same information repeatedly.

POS app version 2.44 changes

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app also displayed guest feedback elements when enabled.

Guest feedback

Guest feedback is only supported on handheld devices at this time. It has been split out of Receipt Options, and is now its own standalone sub-workflow.

In the guest feedback workflow, the guest is first shown a screen with two thumbs up/down buttons and a Skip option, which bypasses the rest of the guest feedback workflow. If the guest chooses a rating option, they are taken to a screen with five reasons for that rating. The guest can select any combination of these reasons, or select nothing at all. Finally, the guest is asked to provide contact information so that the restaurant can respond to the feedback if desired. If the POS app has the guest's email address or phone number based on previous transactions, and they choose the corresponding option, the POS app enters that information in the input field with sensitive information masked for security.

POS app version 2.44 changes

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app partially combined guest feedback with Digital Receipt Options.

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app displayed the reasons screen after the contact information screen.

Rewards signup

The POS app only displays the rewards signup screen if the restaurant has an active loyalty program and the payment is not already associated with a rewards account. The POS app displays an input field for email or phone, and provides a No Thanks option to skip the signup step.

Whether the POS app displays email or phone input is controlled by your restaurant's configuration for the rewards program. If the POS app has the guest's email address or phone number, the app enters that information in the input field with identifying information masked for security.

POS app version 2.44 changes

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app would skip this step for cash payments unless the "Thank you dialog" was enabled.

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app would first ask the guest if they wanted to sign up.

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app presented rewards signup as a two-step process. The POS app first asked guests if they wanted to sign up for a rewards account, then prompted guests for their email addresses and phone numbers only after they chose Yes.

Payment summary

The payment summary screen always appears for credit card payments, but only appears for cash payments if the Thank You Dialog option is enabled for your restaurant in the Toast administration back-end. This screen displays a quick summary of the payment the guest has just completed. If a cash payment had change due, that is displayed here. If the payment was for less than the outstanding balance of the check, the remaining balance is displayed here. And, if the guest signed up for rewards or had a preexisting rewards account, rewards information is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

POS app version 2.44 changes

  • Previous versions of the Toast POS app did not display change due information for cash payments.
