Guests 2.31

This section provides information about changes that affect the guest experience at a restaurant.

Improvements

The following notes provide information about new and improved functionality.

Guest Payment Enhancement for Guest-Facing Displays

Note

This feature is in limited release.

This release adds the capability for guests to pay checks with credit cards on guest-facing display devices. Guests can insert or swipe their own credit cards on a card reader that is dedicated to guest payments. Some aspects of the guest payment workflow are as follows:

  • A Guest Pay button is now available as a new payment option on the payment screen. The button is present only if you have enabled a guest card reader on the Toast POS device. Note that if you remove the guest card reader, the Guest Pay button is also removed from the payment screen.

  • When the employee taps the Guest Pay button, the guest view prompts the guest to insert or swipe a credit card. This guest payment workflow can also allow the guest to select a tip amount, digitally sign the receipt, and select a receipt option (such as emailing the receipt or printing it).

  • While the guest payment workflow is in progress, the employee view displays a Change Payment Type screen that shows the state of the guest payment workflow and also allows the employee to cancel the payment and return to the payment screen.

  • If a credit card payment processing error or declined payment occurs, the error message is shown on the Change Payment Type screen in both the guest view and the employee view.

  • If the guest pays only a part of the bill, a Guest Pay dialog reminds the guest of the remaining balance on the check.

  • All guest-facing display screens now have the Toast branding (except for screens that display a keypad).

  • Guest payments are supported in offline mode.

To enable guest payments, guest-facing display Toast POS devices now support a guest card reader in addition to the employee card reader. Card reader updates are handled as follows:

  • If you add an additional card reader to a Toast POS device that has already been enabled for EMV, it will trigger an EMV capability check for the new card reader. If an update is required, you are transitioned to the Card Reader Updates screen where you can install the updates. If you decline to update the card reader, then the reader is not added to the Toast POS device.

  • If your Toast POS device has dual card readers, updating a card reader will update both readers (that is, you do not have to update each reader separately). If the update fails for either reader, EMV is disabled for the Toast POS device.

Changes to Email and SMS Receipts

This release updates the information included on receipts sent by email or SMS. In particular, messages are now identified as coming from your restaurant rather than from Toast, the order number replaces the order price, and, if your location has the guest feedback feature enabled, the message includes a "tell us how we did" prompt.

For emailed receipts, the changes are as follows:

  • The email From line uses the restaurant name only.

  • If guest feedback on digital receipts is enabled, the email Subject line reads like this example: "Tell us how we did! Receipt for Order #123 at Mary's Restaurant".

  • If guest feedback on digital receipts is disabled, the email Subject line reads like this example: "Receipt for Order #123 at Mary's Restaurant".

  • Digital receipts no longer show an image of guests' signatures. Restaurant employees can still view digital receipts with guests' signatures from the Toast administration back-end.

For the SMS receipts, the changes are as follows:

  • If guest feedback on digital receipts is enabled, the SMS body reads like this example: "Tell us how we did and review your receipt for Order #123 at Mary's Restaurant".

  • If guest feedback on digital receipts is disabled, the SMS body reads like this example: "Receipt for Order #123 at Mary's Restaurant".

  • Digital receipts no longer show an image of guests' signatures. Restaurant employees can still view digital receipts with guests' signatures from the Toast administration back-end.

For more information about guest feedback, see this Toast Central article.

Improvements to Printed Guest Receipts

This release provides the following updates to a printed guest receipt:

  • Fixes an error in calculation for suggested tip amounts on post-payment receipts. Previously, when a paid receipt was reprinted, the suggested tip amount was based on the Payment + Tip, instead of the payment alone.

  • For checks that are discounted 100%, the suggested gratuity is now based on the actual check total, prior to the discount. Previously, the suggested tip amount in this scenario was $0.

  • Removes the word Additional from the tip line if that gratuity is a Delivery Fee. This makes it clear that the delivery fee is separate from the tip amount.

  • For receipts that are partially paid, only the Amount Due line now appears in bold font. Previously, the Total line was also bolded, causing confusion about how much was still owed. For more information, see Updated Workflow for Partially Authorized Payments.

Menu Items That Are Not Discountable Are Excluded from LevelUp Loyalty Program

If your restaurant uses the LevelUp loyalty program, setting Can be discounted to No for a menu item now prevents sales of that menu item from accruing loyalty program points. Setting Can be discounted to No also prevents guests from using LevelUp loyalty program rewards to purchase the menu item.

Kiosk Terminals Can Redeem AppFront Rewards

Guests can now redeem AppFront loyalty program rewards at kiosk terminals. Guests can scan AppFront QR codes to look up their loyalty program accounts using the terminal camera.

Fixes

The following notes provide information about fixed problems.

Modifier Options with Images Attached No Longer Cause Crashes

Modifier options that have images attached to them no longer cause Elo V2 kiosk devices to crash.

Corrected Paytronix Workflow

This release corrects a workflow error that occurred when payment from a guest in the Paytronix rewards program was not completed. When the Paytronix Rewards dialog box opens and an employee selects Cancel or does not enter a program ID number and selects Done, the system now proceeds to the payment processing screen. Previously, an error message appeared and the order screen redisplayed.

Updated Receipt Info for Combo Discounts

This release updates the appearance of guest receipts for orders that include a non-fixed total combo discount. If the combo discount is for an item that is typically ordered with additional, individually priced modifiers (such as a nachos item with guacamole and sour cream modifiers), the configured, undiscounted prices for those modifiers are no longer listed below the discounted item price. Previously, the receipt showed the modifier prices separately, even though they had already been added to the combo discount price.

Screen Rotation Error Corrected in Guest Feedback Workflow

This release fixes an error caused by changing the screen orientation of a hand-held device while providing guest feedback. Previously, when a user selected the check box to allow Toast to contact them for additional information and also selected the No Receipt option, rotating the device would cause the Toast app to crash.

Image Caching Issue Corrected

In version 2.30, image caching was broken, causing menu images to fail to load and display in the Toast POS app. This problem particularly affected Toast kiosk devices that were restarted. This problem has been fixed.
